چکیده

Working memory and processing speed are related to intelligence. This study measures concurrently working memory, processing speed and processing efficiency along with fluid, crystallized and spatial intelligence. Two hundred sixty five participants took part in the study. The findings show that working memory and processing efficiency predict fluid, but not crystallized and spatial intelligence. These results are consistent with the neural noise hypothesis based on the empirical observation of synchronous activity of neurons in the brain. Higher scores on fluid intelligence are thought to be related to smaller levels of neural noise-oscillations, as well as to greater levels of processing efficiency and working memory. 2008 Elsevier Ltd. Article history: Received 12 December 2011 Received in revised form 14 March 2012 Accepted 10 May 2012 Available online 6 June 2012 This study explored the controversy surrounding working memory: whether it is a unitary system providing general purpose resources or a more differentiated system with domainspecific sub-components. A total of 348 participants completed a set of 6workingmemory task...

Fluid/spatial and crystallized intelligence in relation to domain-specific working memory: A latent-variable approach

Fluid/spatial intelligence, crystallized intelligence and their relationships to verbal and visuospatial working memory (WM) were studied. A total of 120 Finnish Air Force recruits participated in this study. Fluid/spatial intelligence was assessed using four different tasks, while crystallized intelligence was defined with the help of test scores of Finnish upper secondary school National Matr...

Hippocampal structure and human cognition: key role of spatial processing and evidence supporting the efficiency hypothesis in females.

Here we apply a method for automated segmentation of the hippocampus in 3D high-resolution structural brain MRI scans. One hundred and four healthy young adults completed twenty one tasks measuring abstract, verbal, and spatial intelligence, along with working memory, executive control, attention, and processing speed. After permutation tests corrected for multiple comparisons across vertices (...
